Well, besides having fun on this board, that is, being entertained by myself, I watched Stalker for the 45 th time (a lil' anniversary). And voila - I found a SNAIL! In the dream sequence in sepia, the first object we see when cam leaves Stalker's face with closed eyes and lowers toward the water, is a miniature island of mud, and lo! on the island there is a snail. The only thing I need to do is to come back here some hours later and congratulate myself: Bravo, Malishas, you have enriched this extraordinary board with inevitable turn-a-side into biology. Yes, I am going mad - I will answer my worried self some more hours later. But the SNAIL exists. If no rain comes, it will not hide.

The Haughty Snail-King Vachel Lindsay
(What Uncle William told the Children)
Twelve snails went walking after night. They’d creep an inch or so, Then stop and bug their eyes And blow. Some folks . . . are . . . deadly . . . slow. Twelve snails went walking yestereve, Led by their fat old king. They were so dull their princeling had No sceptre, robe or ring— Only a paper cap to wear When nightly journeying.
This king-snail said: “I feel a thought Within. . . . It blossoms soon. . . . O little courtiers of mine, . . . I crave a pretty boon. . . . Oh, yes . . . (High thoughts with effort come And well-bred snails are ALMOST dumb.) “I wish I had a yellow crown As glistering . . . as . . . the moon.”
--------------------------------->
The SNAIL exists. It's up to us to understand its existence once and for all.
After all, at the top of all that mud, the Snail really becomes a king on its own. It's a metaphor, a visual one. Even the Stalker is a king of its own world, and that same world is just a pile of sh*t.
Nice observation, Malishas.

Though the camouflage makes it barely visible. And Stalker is the mud.

I just saw it for the third time on a projected DVD on a pretty big screen. The second time I watched it alone in a cold basement shrouded in blankets. That was probably the best way to see it.

Yes! I knew I would find it at last. A place where I can meet total devotion to what REALLY counts!
So why not rest here, light the camp-fire, share the bread and uncork the wine?
By the way, have you ever read The Possessed, by Fyodor Mikhailovich D?
Regards

I'm afraid I hasn't read anything of Mr. Dostoevsky. Rather weird, but that's the truth.. Why the question?
Just a remark - no wine please.. I'm no AA, I only want to preserve the state of mind as it is. You get pretty drunk from the movie itself.

"I'm afraid I hasn't read anything of Mr. Dostoevsky. Rather weird, but that's the truth.. Why the question? Just a remark - no wine please.. I'm no AA, I only want to preserve the state of mind as it is. You get pretty drunk from the movie itself" Isn’t it out of being possessed in some way or another we watch a film over and over again, especially a film most people are unable to get through? Here is something else than ordinary nerdiness. Something similar to this is depicted in one of the characters in the book: “I don’t know about the others, but I feel that I can’t do the same as everybody. Everybody thinks and then at once thinks of something else. I can’t think of something else. All my life I think of one thing.” Yes, I think the best drunkenness is spiritual drunkenness, the intoxication you might get from music, great literature or some films. Again I want to make an extract from the same book to show one of the most striking examples of peak experience I’ve seen in literature: “There are seconds – they come five or six at a time – when you suddenly feel the presence of eternal harmony in all its fullness. It is nothing earthly. I don’t mean that it is heavenly, but a man in his earthly semblance can’t endure it. He has to undergo a physical change or die. This feeling is clear and unmistakable. It is as you suddenly apprehended all nature and suddenly said: ‘Yes it is true – it is good’. God, when He created the world, said at the end of each day of creation: ‘Yes it is true, it is good.’ It is not rapture, but just gladness. You forgive nothing because there is nothing to forgive. Nor do you really love anything – oh, it is much higher than love! What is so terrifying about it is that it is so terribly clear and such gladness. If it went on for more than five seconds, the soul could not endure it and must perish. In those five second I live through a lifetime and I am ready to give my life for them, for it’s worth it. To be able to endure it for ten seconds, you would have to undergo a physical change. I think man ought to stop begetting children. What do you want children for, what do you want mental development, if your goal has been attained? It is said in the gospel that in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. It’s a hint.” Well, this was a bit extreme, especially since the drunkenness only lasts for five seconds... But I think we are getting away from the topic.

"I think the best way to honour it is not to just watch it again (and then return to our usual petty bourgeois occupations), but to let it influence our life! Greater than watching Stalker is to live like a stalker. "
Beautiful concept.
