Both the book and the screenplay are written by Strugatskie brothers, and as far as i remember Boris Strugatskiy, who's still alive, has never mentioned the Mayak incedent as any kind of source of inspiation.

It was really only a speculation. But still, if Strugatsky didn't take it as his inspiration, who says AT didn't either? The whole setting reminds you of a radiation zone, where a nuclear accident has eradicated all flora and fauna. Of course, there is that dog. But we all agree that it could be also a metaphor for a sort of thing from the outside, a deus ex machina maybe.

An interesting link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zone_of_alienation Anyway... about the speculation predicting the Zone as an "irradiated area" of some sort. Have you noticed that the Serpent has the very thin layer of hair on the left side being white-coloured? Is that an effect of either nuclear-induced radiations or even mysterious radiations present in the Zone?

If we speak about the white area in his hair, so it would be appropriate to consider, what does Professor meant by saying "He [Stalker] was mutilated here." Was it a trap, an experiment or perhaps he was also intended to be 'sacrificed'?

Indeed he's a radioactive mutant, like the Incredible Hulk... The whole Zone is the metaphor for Chernobyl shot to annoy the government. And Gorchakov - a gray curl! - is a mutant created in KGB labs. Let's not mention Kris Kelvin - the front gray curl! - he's an obvious mutant from space.

Was it a trap, an experiment or perhaps he was also intended to be 'sacrificed'? That's an interesting point of view, not far from truth, even if I get a better theory, more plausible: Frankly, I see it like a "result" of the countless times the Serpent has been "exposed" to the stronger psychological forces acting in the Zone. White hair are often associated to stress, mental pressure, fear.

But the white hair does not usually gather in one place. I believe it to be an immediate effect, that is, it happened not in time, but at once.
A little off-topic: why was Professor not sleeping all the night? I tend to think he was having that talk with Stalker (also getting f.ex. instructions about the car), but Stalker manages to return home before the journey (but not really to sleep).
