Horrifying translation it was. But wife's name is correct, it is Guta. Is this the translation we have the link to?
Actually, I should say that in Lithuanian translation the town is called Marmont, not Harmont (in Russian begins with x). There are also two editions of the original, so there are differences in floor number on which Redrick's and Kirill's office is - depending on which Russian edition was used, and some paragraphs differ too.
At least we have the correct characters' names..
Let's read the original. Otherwise we're lost.
Still about mistakes - what experience do you have with English subtitles for Stalker? The only subtitles I've seen it with, are Danish, and they got completely wrong the nicknames Writer gives Stalker (Chingachguk and so on). How did they solve the Little Monkey's problem? They simply used 'the little (child)' instead!

In the version of English subtitles which I have
Stalker's daughter is called Monkey
Chingachguk is Chingachgook
Stalker is called Leather Stocking too
Porcupine is Porcupine
so I can't see problem with names, but I must say that I usually watch Stalker with Czech subtitles, so I'm not sure that the English subtitles are all correct (I think they are)
If I'll have a time at the weekend I might watch Stalker with English subtitles to check them

In Danish these names were mixed into this: 'one of them in leather jackets and with big snakes'.

OK OK, from one point of view is a bliss, but on the other side you can't help with checking English or other subtitles... but you're right Stalker is best in Russian orginal...

I'm not checking the subtitles because I cannot understand something. I'm discussing the meaning because I translated the film into English and I am pretty in doubt at some places - not what they mean, but how should they sound in English. That is why I am insisting on raising more questions - I want to be sure that the meaning is intact, no matter all this multi-language approach.
It's just the matter of 'broadcasting', for me alone Stalker needs no translation - although there might appear mistakes and everything from my own disturbed mind (that's really legal from the postmodern point of view).
But it's not the essence - the essence is in giving a translation of a text, not of meaning, and I suppose it holds in that transcript of mine. So what I'm doing is purifying the English text and making it understandable.

I did not want to start a new thread, but anyway the topic is new:
what do you think about the dialogs in the scene when they arrive to the Zone and stay for a while by the tracks - usually it is recommended to avoid accidental rhyme in a non-poetic texts, both in literature and in film, but here we get two examples of such, let's call it, mistakes. namely, '...familija takaja - Dikobraz? - Da net, klichka takzhe kak i u vas' and '...chingachguki, balshye zmei. - U nivo biografia pastrashnei'.

People often do rhyme accidentally, this is just realistic... But if Tarkovskiy or ABS meant it this way... it shall stay a mistery forever, i'm afraid o.o

At this point, I prefer to think that his totemic animal/Stalking nickname is 'SERPENT', as the Writer usually refers to him (even 'Leather Stocking' sounds quite in tune with the whole concept).
