From Internet Movie Database:
"It could be possible that Stalker, speaking about Porcupine, speaks about himself. It would explain, why he is not going into the Room (Porcupine's brother - a person, Stalker offered to reach the Room and pray for daughter's health (this situation is in the book). Instead he got money and his wish was not granted (that's not in the book); also, about Porcupine hanging himself - why does Stalker has a bandage on his neck, in some pictures it reminds gauze? Perhaps he has attempted to commit a suicide, but even in that he was not successful. He invents Porcupine to describe his own state of beeing when he still believed the room could help his daughter and also to make his clients believe. "Who told you about Porcupine, about the Room?"- asks Writer. "He."- replies Professor.

He could be right, after all. The Stalker's neck displayed a slight use of bandages, after all. I must confess that I'm surprised.

I would not call it a slight usage Well, give me your 2 cents. It's an intriguing theory, but I don't believe to it.
