I had recently read a book on Tarkovsky's works and there was stated that this movie Stalker should be treated as a koan, that is, not as a meaning in itself, but as leading to the meaning - the superior meaning, I suppose, combined with each person's own inner life. Koan is the experience that accompanies awakening or spiritual insight. I find it to be a very good explanation about how the movie affects us. As we were discussing various pieces of the movie and we saw them connected by the journey, nonetheless we cannot describe how they evolve from each other or what are they leading to. If we refer to the movie as a koan, then it becomes obvious, that such explanations or construction of the certain structures is absolutely superfluous. It is because after the confrontation with the koan, you have to leave it behind, like an empty shell, that no other value has than that you provide it with while you're on the way to the insight. And it may be the reason why Stalker affects so many people - because it is an universal tool, elaborately created, but worthless without one's individual experience.

It makes perfect sense to me. When Professor says, like: "Well, I don't understand now, why even bother going here...", it is so zen!
