Dear Stalkers, That's the biggest problem to solve, in my view. Read the topic title. It says it all. The Italian DVD release seems pretty good to me in terms of VIDEO and AUDIO transfer... "pretty good" is still not enough, since we're talking about a movie based on a VISUAL LANDSCAPE of details, and it requires the best resolution possible as cinematic product. So what's about the RUSSIAN DVD edition? The American one? The English one? Are they good? Should we compile a petition to demand somewhat of a "Special Edition", a treatment similar to the one that 'SOLARIS' received many years ago? Found this about the RUSCICO release: www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/board/flat/48877983(you have to be registered at IMDB to see the flat version of the threat) Basically, RUSCICO screwed the audio track, even in its original mono rendition (missing gunshots sound and things like that). My final question is: is the supreme masterpiece preserved forever for the many decades to come? Bottom line. The Ferret

I've got russian "Krupnyy plan" release and it seem to be good one. At least, the 0:33 mono gunshot's on its place and the picture looks good. Although i have no other discs to compare (except an ancient "KP" 3CD '96 release ^^). On the backcover it has the "Full restoration of picture and sound" mark, but i haven't heard anything suspicious about this one (like about "Andrey Rublev" picture restoration).

At least, Russians got it right!

"Nov. 11 on Kino, new dvd."
Our prayers are ****NOT**** unheard.
That's the only info I have !!! Wait for more details.
It looks like it will be a special edition.
Thanks, God. If there's a God.
Anyway, it has been rumoured that the ARTIFICIAL EYE 'Stalker' edition is identical to the second RUSCICO 'Stalker' edition (original mono), and that KINO editions usually suck! (http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/~tstronds/nostalghia.com/TheTopics/DVD_Recommendations.html)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes. The Kino 2006 version is great in sound seperation and in video quality. Just do not watch it with a computer because most DVD programs does not recognize the jump between both parts of the movie (crashed my Power DVD software). With a DVD player it works fine.

On the DVD Kino's DVD release of Stalker is impressive for a number of reasons. The superb image quality accurately preserves Tarkovsky's stark contrast of a dreary future with the colors of The Zone. Even more impressive is the surround-sound mix, which is nearly three-dimensional in its 5.1-channel clarity (allowing the film's dank, dripping environment to literally come alive on the soundtrack). Disc 2 offers new (2006) interviews with three of Tarkovsky's surviving collaborators (music composer Eduard Artemyev, cinematographer Aleksandr Knyazhinsky, and set decorator Ranuts Safiullin), each providing their own unique and reverent perspective on Tarkovsky's creative process. A five-minute excerpt from "The Steamroller and the Violin" (Tarkovsky's 1960 diploma film from the Soviet film school VGIK) shows the young director already in admirable control of his craft, and "Memory" is a five-minute short from 1997 (directed by Serghei Minenok) that combines images of Tarkovsky's abandoned home in Russia with images from Stalker. Also included: A photo album of production images and behind-the-scenes stills, and language options including the original Russian, dubbed English, dubbed French, and optional English, French, or Spanish subtitles. --Jeff Shannon
