I was wondering if anyone has any insight to the final scene in the zone, with the black liquid slowly seeping through the water, and the short clip of Ravel's Bolero playing. I'm most interested in what the music clip means, as I'm really stumped on this one.

I was wondering if anyone has any insight to the final scene in the zone, with the black liquid slowly seeping through the water, and the short clip of Ravel's Bolero playing. I'm most interested in what the music clip means, as I'm really stumped on this one. It's not really a simbolism of some sort. It's more a "post-modern" image, depicting what's going on "underneath" the surface of the Zone. It's like a psychic cauldron ready to explode in the visitors's minds. The music underlines the energy and the friction. The black liquid is the corruption. Every "concept" in the Zone assumes a physical appearance. Literally. Hope it helps.

Personally I'm not sure how to interpret many things like this one in the film. I tend to take them neither as symbols nor as materialized concepts, but rather as the director's direct attempts to represent a certain state of mind or spirit. It is arguable, however, if this particular state of mind is meant to belong "originally" to one of the characters (maybe even Zone?), to the director himself or even to the viewer... All and all, you are free to interpret it your own way.
